Biography
Thomas O'Mara was an IWW member from Sacramento. Thomas O'Mara received a four-year sentence for giving testimony in court on behalf of a fellow member of the IWW and served a prison sentence in San Quentin from August 25, 1923, to 1926. (See also the entry for J. A. Casdorf.)
The International Labor Defense holiday roster in the December 29, 1925 Daily Worker lists this prisoner, printed as Tom O'Mara, at San Quentin California. Its printed identifier is 38293; this is a prison number or mailing designation, not a year or a custody date. This documents confinement at the roster’s reporting time, without establishing an admission, transfer, release, new conviction or complete duration. The June 14, 1922 report identifies the Casdorf–Firey defense witnesses as actually arrested after testimony and still held in jail despite a proposed$60,000 Liberty-bond bail offering. The May 23, 1923 LaRue opinion places the earlier trial in late March/early April 1922. This supplies pretrial custody within the already identified California prosecution, without replacing later prison-receipt dates or extending a specific penitentiary-service counter. The newspaper prints J. O’Mara in the same witness cohort, whereas the existing identified case uses Thomas O’Mara. The event bridge is documented, but the conflicting initial is retained as a source discrepancy rather than automatically creating a new person or alias. 1920s remaining-entry review: Kohn, American Political Prisoners, page 165, explicitly identifies Thomas O'Mara as the Sacramento IWW defense witness and states that his San Quentin term ran from August 25, 1923 to 1926. The structured release year 1925 conflicted with both this source and the existing biography. It is corrected to 1926 with year precision, explicitly based on secondary historical evidence. The full original Daily Worker page 5 of December 29, 1925 was visually inspected: its prison correspondence directory individually lists Tom O'Mara, number 38293, at San Quentin. That directory supports late-1925 custody but does not establish his release year or prove a discharge day; the 1926 endpoint comes from Kohn. Targeted contemporary searches did not produce an actual discharge report, and White's available book text yielded no individual O'Mara match. An original San Quentin register remains needed for any finer precision. The generic federal-charge label is corrected to the California case identified by Kohn.
The February 26, 1924 Daily Worker political-prisoner roster individually prints Tom O'Mara with historical prisoner number 38293. Its continued Walla Walla heading appears to run into California prisoners, while this individual’s existing record documents San Quentin. The printed identifier is transcribed; no transfer to Washington or institution change is inferred from that heading. This is a contemporary institutional identifier, not a federal BOP register number. No admission or release date, individual sentence length, actual duration, organizational membership or present status is inferred.
