Biography

Thomas Gagnon was one of three striking painters arrested following a clash at Cooper Union in New York during the painters’ strike. The Daily Worker identifies Thomas Gagnon, Harry Lenard and Joseph Riechenfeld as members of Painters Local 874, charged with disorderly conduct and due in court Friday, September 4, 1936. Pickets told the newspaper that strikebreakers charged their line on Wednesday, September 2, one throwing a hammer. That account is attributed to the pickets. The article confirms arrest but does not supply the individual release, verdict or exact duration. The photograph depicts unnamed pickets and does not identify this person.
