Biography

Terry Cannon was a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee organizer, founder of The Movement newspaper, and one of the Oakland Seven prosecuted for organizing the October 1967 Stop the Draft Week demonstrations. The Seven were acquitted in March 1969. In a separate prosecution arising from profanity used during a demonstration, Judge Elton C. Lawless sentenced Cannon to three months in county jail on November 22, 1968. Cannon served two weeks before his lawyer obtained his release on appeal bail.

The January 1969 Movement report identifies Judge Elton C. Lawless at Cannon’s November 22 sentencing and reports that appeal bail was ultimately set at $1,250 after two weeks actually served. The nominal three-month term is not his actual total, and no exact release date is calculated from the two-week account.
