Biography

Tariq MaQbool is a Pakistani American incarcerated writer and prison-journalism advocate. Inquest reported in November 2025 that he described being sent to solitary confinement days after publishing an essay about solitary confinement. The reported retaliation for journalism is the political context of this profile; the claim is attributed to his account and is not presented as a court finding. His original imprisonment arose from murder and related convictions, not a conviction for journalism. A 2018 federal habeas opinion describes two consecutive life terms, with concurrent kidnapping and weapons terms and other convictions merged. Governor Phil Murphy subsequently commuted his sentence: the January 2026 announcement lists parole eligibility in 2032 and a maximum prison end date in 2047, followed by five years of parole supervision. These are eligibility and sentence milestones, not actual release dates. His family-maintained Captive Voices biography currently identifies East Jersey State Prison as his place of confinement. His reporting-retaliation incident dates and duration are not established in the reviewed sources.

Verified detail sources (October 9, 2026): In his September 9, 2021 first-person essay, Tariq MaQbool explicitly states that he was born in 1977 and describes himself as a young man. Birth year is stored with year precision; no month or day is supplied. Source 1.

Case

Charges: Reported retaliatory solitary confinement for prison journalism; administrative confinement, not a newly verified criminal charge
Sentence: Inquest’s November 13, 2025 report attributes to Tariq MaQbool an account of being placed in solitary days after publishing an article about solitary confinement. No disciplinary order, adjudicated finding, exact start or end date, or segregation duration is established. Dates are deliberately unset. This case describes reported retaliation for expression and must not be confused with his underlying murder and related convictions. The original criminal sentence described in the 2018 habeas opinion was subsequently commuted; the January 2026 governor announcement identifies parole eligibility in 2032, maximum prison end date in 2047 and five years of parole supervision. Neither milestone is a completed release.
