Biography

Sylvia Ostrow was an eighteen-year-old Young Communist League member arrested outside the February 11, 1930 Newark unemployment meeting while distributing its leaflets. She was held under $1000 bail and charged under New Jersey sedition legislation. Her father obtained bail on the following arraignment day, but she was arrested again almost immediately while distributing circulars protesting the other prisoners high bail. Judge Harold Simandl ordered her father to spank her in court; after public protest, Simandl recalled her the following morning and set her free. These are two actual arrests; no exact hourly custody total or birthdate is inferred from the retrospective age.
