Biography
George Breitman was a Newark unemployed-workers organizer and a state leader of the Workers Alliance. A March 1, 1941 Militant election profile recalls his leading role in the nine-day Trenton State House occupation of 1936 and reports that a few months later he was arrested for leading a WPA strike that tied up Burlington County projects. It identifies him as editor of The Hunger Fighter and Workers Voice, organizer of a joint AFL-CIO unemployment committee in 1937-38, and a Workers Defense League state committee member who supported the Cranbury flogging victims. His own arrest is explicit, but its exact day, statutory charge, jail location, individual disposition and complete duration are unprinted. The Trenton occupation is not itself treated as a separate arrest. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/etol/newspape/themilitant/1941/v5n09-mar-01-1941.pdf#page=3
