Biography
Susan Stern was an antiwar activist and one of the Seattle Seven. During the December 14, 1970 contempt proceedings she continued speaking in support of her co-defendants after the judge ordered her to stop.
The prosecution concerned the February 17, 1970 antiwar demonstration in Seattle. Judge George Boldt declared a mistrial and imposed summary contempt sentences. On November 18, 1971, the Ninth Circuit reversed the contempt judgments because the procedure and factual certifications were inadequate. Further contempt proceedings produced reduced sentences; the original conspiracy prosecution ended in 1973. The original sentences do not establish the actual total time served.
