Biography
Sol Hertz was a New York labor activist and Communist Party organizer. Police arrested him on a picket line on November 19, 1931 and charged him with disorderly conduct; he was later reported out on bail, but the available account does not give his release date. Federal immigration authorities later threatened him with deportation in 1951 because of his political activity. No confinement arising from the deportation proceeding has been established.
The strike report identifies Hertz and Anna Brooks as leaders at Spear Underwear Company, 134 Spring Street, arrested on Thursday on the picket line and already out on bail. It says the employer had an Industrial Union agreement but was sending work to open shops and introducing piecework. This adds the shop and organizing context to the November 19 arrest without turning publication day into a physical bail-release date or joining the later deportation proceeding into a continuous custody span.
