Biography
Sol Greenberg was a nineteen-year-old Young Communist League member detained with Michael Shantzek for distributing anti-war leaflets at the Citizens’ Military Training Camp at Fort Logan, Colorado. The Daily Worker, October 22, 1931, page 2 alleges beatings by army officers and American Legion members, followed by two days in the guardhouse and seven days in the county jail. It says the ILD secured their release on 2,000-dollar bail each. The headline and opening claim a twenty-year sentence under the Colorado Anarch-Sedition Act, yet the same article calls October 15 a first hearing and announces a further jury proceeding in February. This internal procedural conflict is preserved; twenty years is not entered as actual service or an independently resolved final sentence. The November 20 report describes the nineteen-year-old workers arrested at Fort Logan while preparing to distribute leaflets to Citizens’ Military Training Camp trainees, held incommunicado and mistreated at night. The announced twenty-year exposure under the anarchy-sedition statute is a possible maximum, not an imposed or completed sentence. Daily Worker, November 20, 1931, original PDF page 2.
