Biography
Samuel R. Caldwell was a Denver laborer and one of the first people imprisoned under the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. Police arrested him on October 5, 1937, after finding cannabis in his hotel room. He received a four-year federal prison sentence and a $1,000 fine and was sent to Leavenworth. He was released in early 1941 and died on June 24 of that year. His case became a prominent example in the campaign against marijuana prohibition.
