Biography

Simon Minor was a Black worker and Georgia chain-gang survivor living in Hempstead, Long Island. Police arrested him at the cafe where he washed dishes on June 21, 1935 and jailed him for extradition to Georgia. His wife described beatings and a ball and chain during his earlier chain-gang confinement. He had lived in Hempstead for more than ten years. The League of Struggle for Negro Rights organized his defense against return to the chain gang. He remained held when the July 1 report was filed; the actual release date is unknown.
