Biography

Shorty Merrill was a New Mexico hunger-march delegate whose signed account in the December 31, 1932 Daily Worker describes two separate jail episodes on his journey. In Fort Worth, Texas, a ten-day rock-pile sentence ended in actual release on the second day after he promised to leave. Subsequently arrested in Kansas City while heading toward St. Louis, he served ten actual days under a thirty-day sentence before escaping and returning to New Mexico. The account gives no exact arrest, sentencing, release or escape dates. The ten- and thirty-day nominal sentences are distinguished from release on the second day in Fort Worth and ten actual days in Kansas City. The second-day wording is an ordinal, not an exact elapsed two-day total. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1932/v09-n313-NY-dec-31-1932-DW-LOC.pdf#page=4
