Biography
Lewis Hurst was a white leader of the Dallas unemployment-insurance fight against peonage and segregation in Dallas, Texas in 1931; after a demonstration of four thousand for unemployment insurance, he was jailed and then handed over to the Ku Klux Klan, flogged, and left for dead before being rescued by Black farmers.
The Daily Worker of March 11 and March 13, 1931, describes a first arrest, bail appeal, a further arrest after distributing Communist literature and protesting police brutality, severe jail beatings, and abduction at the jail gate. The March 13 issue printed his identified photograph and incorrectly reported his death. This contemporary reporting is preserved as conflicting evidence; Hurst survived, as his established biography records. The articles do not establish precise boundaries for each custody phase, so the original interval is not split into invented date spans.
The March 9 Dallas dispatch printed March 10, 1931 says Coder and Hurst were abducted on the previous Friday after jail release, implying March 6. This conflicts with the independently recorded March 5 chronology. Its claim of a February 25 arrest for both also conflicts with Coder’s later firsthand account. The Kansas City dispatch identifies the Missouri unemployed leader among workers arrested with A. W. Berry and William Burnley and subsequently released through pressure in court. This is a separate 1934 Missouri relief-organizing episode, distinct from Hurst’s 1931 Dallas imprisonment and abduction; exact custody days and individual charge are not supplied. The March 22 Dallas dispatch attributes the kidnapping and beating of Hurst and Coder to organized anti-labor terror. It describes repeated fines imposed on Hurst’s unnamed lawyer during trial. Those fines are not Hurst’s sentence, and the report establishes no new arrest or release interval.
