Biography

Shirley Uzin was a Young Communist League member arrested with another young woman on February 23, 1936 while distributing leaflets exposing Nazi attacks on Catholic youth outside Our Lady of Wisdom church, 104th Street and Jerome Avenue. The February 24 Daily Worker reports that a Jamaica police lieutenant invoked an old Sabbath ordinance to hold them. ILD attorney Irving Schwab disputed use of that ordinance, and the paper says the priest had not brought the complaint. Trial was scheduled February 24 in Rockaway Beach Court; no outcome or precise physical discharge is established.
