Biography

Shinzaburo Sumida was a Honolulu Nisei businessman and vice president of T. Sumida & Co.; Daizo Sumida was his uncle and adoptive father. JCCH records December 1941 arrest, Sand Island detention and February 1942 mainland transfer. Listed confinement includes Angel Island March 1942, Camp McCoy March-May 1942, Camp Forrest May-June 1942 and Camp Livingston June-August 1942. His August 1942 return to Hawaii continued in Sand Island August 1942-March 1943 and Honouliuli March 1943-November 1944. He was transferred again to the mainland November 1944, held at Tule Lake November 1944-November 1945 and returned to Honolulu aboard Shawnee December 1945. This was US wartime civilian incarceration; no individual criminal conviction is established by the archive. Source: https://incarceration.jcchawaii.org/internees/sumida-shinzaburo

The original May 1, 1942 Camp McCoy civilian-internee roster individually records Shinzaburo Sumida, serial ISN-HJ-60-(Ci), as permanently interned at the camp after transfer from Fort McDowell, California. This supplies a contemporaneous individual custody reference for the existing wartime chronology. May 1 is a roster observation, not an inferred first admission or release. The historical internment serial is not a modern BOP register number.

Sentence: Administrative wartime civilian confinement after December 1941 arrest. August 1942 Hawaii return and November 1944 Honouliuli departure were transfers within continuing confinement, not final releases.
