Biography

Shaun McGillin Maloney, also known as Jack Maloney and John or Jack Severson, was a Teamsters organizer active in the 1934 Minneapolis strike and later the over-the-road organizing drive in Sioux City, Iowa. He was convicted of interfering with interstate commerce after a bakery delivery truck was destroyed during a strike and served a federal prison term at Sandstone, Minnesota. A 1979 tribute reproduced his firsthand recollection of receiving help from Evelyn Reed after his release. He later worked in the merchant marine and became president of Seattle longshore Local 19. University and Minnesota archival collections record his birth on September 10, 1911 and death on December 19, 1999.

The August 24, 1940 Socialist Appeal reports that Maloney and Omaha Drivers Local 554 member Lou Miller had entered federal prisons the preceding week, Maloney at Sandstone and Miller at Leavenworth. Five other organizers remained in county jail awaiting commitment papers. It says the Eighth Circuit in St. Paul denied the seven unionists’ appeal in a prosecution arising from the 1938 Sioux City drivers strike and alleged truck damage. This contemporaneous relative admission report conflicts with the archival June 1940 admission month; no exact day or replacement month is imposed.
