Biography
Shakir Hamoodi is an Iraqi-born American nuclear engineer, business owner, interfaith leader and opponent of the Iraq War. From 1994 through 2003, he helped send money to relatives and other families in Iraq despite United States sanctions that barred the transfers. He pleaded guilty to sanctions violations and was sentenced on May 16, 2012 to three years in federal prison and three years of supervised release. He entered the federal prison at Leavenworth on August 28, 2012. On December 9, 2014 he was transferred from prison to a halfway house in Columbia, Missouri; about two weeks later he returned home under house arrest until his sentence ended on April 7, 2015.
Missing sentencing-day review October 13, 2026: The May 17, 2012 AP report hosted by KBIA dates sentencing to Wednesday, May 16. KBIA's post-admission September 1 report confirms he had begun custody within the preceding week. Existing admission and physical-prison-to-halfway-house endpoint are retained, not newly represented as exact-day verified by that broad statement. Sentencing is not admission, and transitional confinement is not silently merged into the physical-prison interval.
