Biography

Seyed Eissa Hashemi is an Iranian-born psychology and business professor who had lived in the United States for more than a decade as a lawful permanent resident. Federal agents detained him in Los Angeles in April 2026 after the State Department revoked the green cards of Hashemi, his wife Maryam Tahmasebi, and their teenage son. Officials based the action on Hashemi’s relationship to his mother, former Iranian vice president Masoumeh Ebtekar, who served as a spokesperson during the 1979 U.S. Embassy hostage crisis. The family’s lawyer told the Associated Press that officials had made no specific allegation against any of the three beyond that relationship. Hashemi has been held separately from his wife and son at the South Texas ICE Processing Center in Pearsall while challenging the detention and proposed removal in federal court. His habeas case was consolidated with the family’s lead case, whose public docket remained active in September 2026 without recording a release.
