Biography

Sarah Cutler was the mother of Emma Schneiderman. In 1929 she was visiting the workers' children's summer camp near Yucaipa, California, when authorities raided it over the display of a red flag and arrested her with camp workers, including her daughter and Yetta Stromberg. The prisoners were taken to San Bernardino Jail. Cutler was acquitted at the camp defendants' trial. She was later sentenced to ninety days in Los Angeles County Jail and a $500 fine for taking part in the August 1, 1930 antiwar demonstration in Los Angeles.

Yetta Stromberg’s first-person account in the November 13, 1929 issue describes the Yucaipa camp raid and San Bernardino prosecution, including the arrest of camp leaders and adults volunteering for cooking, washing and cleaning. It reports Sarah Cutler acquitted, while the others faced conspiracy proceedings; Stromberg additionally faced the red-flag count. The article places the trial’s conclusion on October 23 and reports $4,000 bail for the other defendants and $7,500 for Stromberg. It identifies Cutler as a visitor to the camp and records her acquittal; no new custody endpoints follow from this report. Further 1920s custody review: The ACLU April 1930 pamphlet names this defendant among the seven arrested in the August 3, 1929 Yucaipa raid and taken to San Bernardino jail. It records pretrial bail but no exact release day. Custody dates describe the initial jail detention, not admission to San Quentin; release is year-precision only. Source: ACLU, The California Red Flag Case, April 1930, pages 3-6. This more precise account supersedes earlier provisional date notes; year-only release values are not January 1 release dates.
