Biography

Martin Shapiro was one of the workers arrested at the Los Angeles May Day demonstration of 1 May 1930 — on charges of parading without a permit, battery and distributing handbills — and held in jail when eight of the eighteen arrested had their charges dropped.

The October18 San Francisco report identifies Martin Shapiro among the defendants arrested at the September14 City Hall unemployment demonstration and sentenced the previous day by Judge Fritz: 30 days. This is a distinct 1931 case; the imposed sentence is not a measured served duration.
