Biography

Samuel Ruth, superintendent of the Richmond and Fredericksburg Railroad, was committed to Castle Thunder on accusations of conveying important information to the United States forces. The Richmond Whig of January 26, 1865, page 1, column 6, dates his arrest to the preceding Monday evening, January 23. The paper attributes the accusation to detective information and says influential friends believed him innocent while officials believed him guilty. It anticipates an examination dependent on a witness reaching Richmond; this article gives no verdict or actual release date.
