Biography

Sam Stein was New Jersey district secretary of the International Labor Defense. A Newark March 1 dispatch in the Daily Worker of March 2, 1935, page 5, reports that four policemen entered his room early Tuesday morning, February 26, after another roomer called police when Stein rang the bell because he had lost his keys. Although he established that he lived there, police took him to the station. In court later the same day, Red Squad chief Red Harris sought to have him held for mental observation. Stein conducted his own defense and the court released him. The newspaper characterized the incident as political targeting.
