Biography
Sam Lugavere was individually named among Ansonia Bootery shoe-salesmen's strike pickets arrested in New York during the week preceding August 1, 1936. The Daily Worker of that date, page 4, reports thirty additional arrests as the seventy-five salesmen struck after fifteen active union members were dismissed. Their union was Retail Shoe Salesmen's Local 1368, affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. The article alleges police were following store managers' directions and reports arrests at West 34th and West 42nd Street stores. It does not identify Sam Lugavere's particular arrest day, formal charge, bail, verdict, sentence or release. The printed name is retained without unsupported expansion or spelling correction.
