Biography

Sam Finkelstein was an organizer for striking meat-market workers in Richmond Hill, New York. The Daily Worker of March 27, 1935, page 4, says he and three discharged Shapiro Market workers were arrested while picketing on the preceding Saturday and held on $500 bail. The strike at 11701 Liberty Avenue opposed wage cuts and sought union conditions. The newspaper attributes the arrest demand to Hebrew Butchers Union leader Benny Levine. It does not identify the three other arrested workers, specify the statutory charge, or establish an eventual release or sentence.
