Biography

Sam Carmen was arrested among ten pickets outside May’s Department Store at 510 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, on Saturday, February 15, 1936. The Daily Worker, February 18, 1936, page 3 says eight defendants were released when the group appeared before Magistrate Charles Solomon at Ninth Magistrates Court, while O’Shay and Carmen were held for further trial. It gives no precise criminal charge, bail, jail-admission date, final verdict or physical release day for these two. The printed given name is not expanded. Page3 identifies SamCarmen as organizer of Unattached,LocalHomelessandTransients,LocalNo.1 and one of three relief delegates arrested and then released in NightCourt. The NewYork labor-organizing context supports the existing profile, while the December1935 relief episode is kept distinct from his February1936 Brooklyn picket arrest.
