Biography
The page 1 Harlem report says police attacked an Unemployed Council meeting at Lenox Avenue and 132nd Street and arrested Sam Brown, Sam Nesin and Grantham De Royal. It describes beatings at the meeting and station, reports Brown’s scalp wounds and De Royal being kicked in the ribs, and says the ILD won dismissal in the 151st Street court. No exact arrest or dismissal day, medical diagnosis or complete confinement total is supplied. Page 1 identifies Sam Brown of Harlem as arrested while leading jobless and homeless Black youth to demand relief at the Home Relief Bureau and reports Judge Aurelio imposed six months while making racist remarks. The common Harlem Unemployed Council role links this report to the council organizer rather than the separate Garvey-dispute namesake or later Brink’s defendant. This 1932 prosecution is distinct from the March 1931 meeting arrest that ended in dismissal. The six months is imposed, not measured service.
