Biography

Ruth White was arrested in a police raid at the Communist Party headquarters at 200 Ellicott Street in Buffalo on Saturday night, October 25, 1930. The Daily Worker of October 28, page 2, in a dispatch dated October 27, individually names the people arrested there, reports disorderly-conduct charges, and says they were held incommunicado. It describes the raid as following police action against a Lafayette Square meeting advertising William Z. Foster’s election appearance. The report alleges that Patrolman Arthur Kroeber beat White and threatened to have her fired, while her condition could not be ascertained because of the incommunicado hold. The report supplies no individual verdict, sentence, place of jail confinement or eventual release; no political membership is inferred merely from presence at the headquarters.
