Biography

Rubin Stacey was a Black man lynched at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 19, 1935. The February 1936 Catholic Worker describes the accusation as threatening and frightening a white woman, notes that he was manacled and powerless in the hands of the law, and says the law failed to protect him from lynching. It describes several hours of physical torture and white children watching the aftermath. The editors explicitly declined to print the NAACP-supplied photograph. The article provides no precise original arrest date or complete custody duration. Source: https://merton.bellarmine.edu/files/original/749dc3d3c63b1289a49c6829487d3f36c95e77e8.pdf#page=2

Brust calls him Reuben “Guff” Stacey and reports three hours at Broward’s courthouse before the July 19, 1935 transfer that ended in lynching.
