Biography

Roger Lippman was an antiwar organizer and Seattle Seven defendant. He describes being jailed after his April 1970 arrest and again after the contempt proceedings, including confinement at McNeil Island with Jeff Dowd.

The prosecution concerned the February 17, 1970 antiwar demonstration in Seattle. Judge George Boldt declared a mistrial and imposed summary contempt sentences. On November 18, 1971, the Ninth Circuit reversed the contempt judgments because the procedure and factual certifications were inadequate. Further contempt proceedings produced reduced sentences; the original conspiracy prosecution ended in 1973. The original sentences do not establish the actual total time served.
