Biography

Robert Rice, identified as the son of playwright Elmer Rice, was arrested while picketing Ohrbach's department store in New York on Saturday, March 2, 1935. The Daily Worker of March 4, page 1, individually identifies him among twelve arrested pickets due in traffic court March 5. It reports ninety-five pickets arrested in the demonstration, later paroled to the custody of an International Labor Defense attorney, and a violent police clearing of Night Court. The article does not identify Rice as either of the two hospitalized people. The court dates were future proceedings, not reported outcomes. This 1935 picket is distinct from the Black teenage Harlem Six defendant Robert Rice prosecuted in 1964.
