Biography

Robert Eaton was an Annapolis Quaker and conscientious objector imprisoned for refusing civilian work required by Selective Service. CCCO listed him in Allenwood in September–October 1969. He was subsequently transferred to Minnesota for disciplinary reasons and completed his prison term. Friends Journal reported that he actually left prison in September 1971. Eaton also served aboard the Phoenix, carrying medical relief supplies to Vietnam.

Robert J. Leach’s account of the 1972 Friends General Conference credits Robert Eaton, John Bach and John Braxton with reflections on prison reality that challenged the privileged position of others present. This adds a documented conference role to Eaton’s existing conscientious-resistance biography; the names of the other speakers are not silently identified with similar names or used to invent new custody cases.
