Biography
George Lakey is a Quaker activist, writer and educator in nonviolent action. During the 1963 civil-rights campaign in Chester, Pennsylvania, he joined a City Hall sit-in and spent a week in jail. In his first-person account, the judge dismissed the case after finding that a police officer had invited him to sit down.
The September 1, 1972 Friends Journal places Lakey with the Earle/Leonardo protest group and says he served two days of a ten-day sentence under a local marine ordinance for improper handling of a boat. The report distinguishes this from the two-hundred-fifty-dollar fines imposed on fourteen participants arrested at the June 12 worship service. The two days are reported actual service, while ten days is the nominal sentence; no exact boat-arrest, commitment or discharge day is printed. This is separate from his 1963 Chester sit-in case.
