Biography

Richard Sullivan was secretary of the Greater New York Unemployment Councils. The July 4, 1934 Daily Worker reported that police clubbed and jailed him during an unemployment relief meeting on Saturday, June 30. A July 2 Union Square protest condemned the police attack. His individual release date and sentence are not established.

Page 3’s August 23 Albany dispatch reports Sullivan’s charges dropped the previous day, August 22. Police had seized him July 31 as he was about to enter the Sons of Italy Hall for an Albany-delegation relief meeting following presentation of demands to Governor Lehman. This is a separate arrest from the June 30 New York relief meeting; dismissal does not itself establish the physical discharge day or uninterrupted custody. Daily Worker, August 28, 1934; relevant page stated in the accompanying profile note.

The Albany November 2 dispatch in the November 3, 1934 Daily Worker identifies Richard Sullivan as secretary of the United Action Conference on Work, Relief and Unemployment and a New York hunger-march leader. It reports that he was jailed and slugged last night, November 1, and released today, November 2, into the custody of International Labor Defense lawyer Joseph Tauber. The name and Albany relief-organizing role identify the same Richard Sullivan already recorded here. This November detention is distinct from the June 30 New York arrest and the July 31 Albany arrest whose charges were dropped in August. The continuation describes other marchers held for two days and singles out Steve Gleason as still jailed; that collective interval is not assigned to Sullivan. The explicitly dated jailing and release establish November 1-2 as this separate physical-confinement interval at calendar-day precision. Its one derived calendar day is a known component, not a claim of twenty-four elapsed hours, dismissal or final termination of the prosecution, or a complete total across his June and July arrests. No statutory charge or source-stated numerical duration is supplied.
