Biography

Rebecca Brodkin was a Newark Communist activist and wife of carpenters-union leader Samuel Brodkin. Grover identifies her among twelve demonstrators arrested during a January 1931 City Hall unemployment protest. His account includes a2008 interview with their daughter Lucille Brodkin Friedman, who recalled police grabbing her mother while she protested a mounted-police charge; Ida Langer took Lucille and her sister home. The account calls the protest early January, while a separate contemporary account associates the wider crackdown with January 28 and February 7; no exact day is imposed.
