Biography

Randy Weaver, formally identified in the Justice Department report as Randall C. Weaver, was prosecuted in the firearms and Ruby Ridge cases. He was arrested in January 1991 and actually released to pretrial supervision the next day. Following the August 1992 standoff, he underwent prolonged criminal custody and trial. The 1993 jury acquitted him of murder, conspiracy and the significant remaining charges, while convicting him of failure to appear and committing an offense while on release. His later actual release was in December 1993. He was born on January 3, 1948 and died on May 11, 2022.

The picture reproduction captions a January 17, 1991 booking and a December 17, 1993 physical release, describing sixteen months. The existing research has conflicting exact December discharge days, so this caption is preserved as source-specific evidence without converting the month-level date into a falsely resolved exact day. The DOJ report individually dates the January 17, 1991 arrest and reproduces a retrospective letter confirming actual January 18 pretrial release. It separately records surrender and arrest on August 31, 1992, the July 8, 1993 verdict and a later actual December 1993 discharge. An arrest or surrender date alone does not establish the date of prison admission, which remains unestablished for these phases. The official summary gives October 26 sentencing and December 18 release, while other chronology and contemporary reporting give October 18 and December 17; only the supported months are recorded. These separate phases do not form one continuous 1991–1993 imprisonment. The original AP obituary quotes his daughter’s memorial dates, January 3, 1948 and May 11, 2022. The portrait is Joe Marquette’s AP photograph of Weaver testifying at the September 6, 1995 Senate hearing, published by NPR.

The Justice Department’s 1994 report records sanctions against the government for delayed FBI disclosure during the 1993 trial, including attorney fees for a lost trial day. It also describes judicial criticism of failures to produce evidence and obey court orders.
