Biography

Paul Sica was a fifty-six-year-old Rahway, New Jersey relief worker with a double rupture who lacked suitable clothing for work. The Daily Worker of March 2, 1935, page 6, reports his arrest and Judge Henry Waldman's order to go to work or go to jail. Relief Director John D. Busch advocated that policy. Workers from nearby Elizabeth investigated and obtained a stay of sentence, then helped establish a Rahway unemployed and relief-workers organization. The arrest establishes actual detention, but the article does not show that the threatened jail sentence was served or provide exact dates.
