Biography

Oscar Day was a Black New York worker whose prosecution was taken up by the International Labor Defense. The Daily Worker of January 23, 1934 reports that he was arrested on December 22, 1933 on a robbery charge brought by his white landlord, M. Markowitz. The paper alleges that Markowitz had first beaten Day because Day did not report for work, and presents the prosecution as racial and labor retaliation. His trial in General Sessions, Part 2, was postponed from January 22 to January 25. The account establishes an actual arrest but does not establish the trial outcome or release date.
