Biography
Nina Droz Franco became a prominent figure in Puerto Rican protest politics around May Day labor demonstrations in 2017 amid anger over austerity and the island’s fiscal crisis. She was arrested the day after those events and federally charged in connection with an alleged attempt to set fire to a Banco Popular building in San Juan.
She later entered a guilty plea and, in 2018, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison; reporting described her incarceration at the Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee and a later release back to Puerto Rico.
Sentencing review October 13, 2026: Primera Hora's June 12, 2018 report confirms the 37-month sentence imposed that afternoon, with credit for detention already served. NotiCel's later court report independently confirms that sentencing date and her November 2019 return to Puerto Rico. The existing prison-release month is retained; a report of return on November 26 does not separately establish the precise prison exit day. The unsupported 914-day exact total derived from a month-only endpoint has been cleared. Later supervised-release proceedings must not be merged into the initial prison episode without custody-phase evidence.
