Biography
Molly Smith was among three unemployed relief delegates arrested after visiting Emergency Relief Bureau No. 60 at East Seventeenth Street and Kings Highway, Brooklyn, to demand relief for hungry families. The August 21, 1936 report says Magistrate Jacob Eilpern sentenced all three the previous day to five days each in the workhouse after they refused administrator Gerald Griffin’s offer to drop charges if they shook hands. The paper attributes the prosecution to relief advocacy. It does not print a statutory charge, exact arrest day or eventual release, and the five-day sentence is not entered as completed service.
