Mohammad El-Mezain
Biography
Mohammad El-Mezain was a senior figure in the Holy Land Foundation and became nationally known through the same long-running terrorism-finance prosecution that targeted the organization’s leadership. The case focused on the charity’s fundraising and disbursement practices—activities his supporters characterized as humanitarian advocacy—while federal prosecutors argued those activities were structured to benefit Hamas-linked institutions.
Following the 2008 convictions, El-Mezain was sentenced in 2009 to 15 years in federal prison in the same proceeding that imposed lengthy terms on multiple leaders.
Judge John L. Kane’s 2018 material-support sentencing comparison identifies Mohammad El-Mezain’s jury conviction for one count of conspiracy to provide material support to Hamas and the imposed 180-month prison term followed by three years of supervised release. This corroborates the earlier conviction and sentence; it supplies no new actual custody endpoint.
The documented case chronology records custody endpoint September 17, 2021. This ended the federal criminal-prison stage; later immigration detention and deportation to Turkey were separate, so it is not a finding of unrestricted freedom in 2021.
