Biography

Miriam Zeitlin Seborer was a physician, former Census Bureau employee and Navy WAVES veteran. She left the United States with her husband Stuart Seborer, his brother Oscar and her mother, and the group secretly entered the Soviet bloc in 1952. They lived near Dresden under the name Smith and moved to Moscow in March 1957. After Miriam tried to contact the U.S. Embassy and return home, Soviet authorities arrested and threatened her and sent her to Alma-Ata in what an FBI informant described as protective custody. Miriam and Stuart divorced in 1961. She was eventually permitted to leave with her son and mother on December 29, 1969.
