Biography

Milton Rayfield was one of four young people arrested Tuesday, August 18, 1936 while picketing Alfred Landon at the Waldorf Astoria under the Young Communist League election committee’s auspices. The August 21 report says the four were out on bail, facing disorderly-conduct proceedings; Rayfield additionally faced a penal-code accusation of wearing a National Guard uniform. Trial was postponed from Wednesday to Friday. This establishes an arrest and bail status, not a completed Friday trial, conviction or exact physical release day. The September1,1936 Daily Worker reports completion of the defense case before Magistrate Hulon Capshaw the previous day,August31, for the four Landon pickets including Milton Rayfield. It reports parole into ILD lawyer Oscar J. Albert’s custody pending investigation and a September10 disposition, while separately describing Rayfield’s uniform accusation and $100bail for SpecialSessions. Its witness account calls the picketing date August17, differing from the earlier report’s August18 arrest; the existing structured date is preserved. A scheduled disposition, denied defense motions and lawyer-custody parole are not recorded as a completed conviction or proof that all physical restraint on every charge ended that day.
