Biography

Mike Masao Mayekawa was a Japanese American participant in the Heart Mountain draft-resistance movement. He was confined at Heart Mountain during World War II and subsequently imprisoned for refusing military conscription.

1942 forced-removal chronology

The institutional biography describes forced removal through Santa Anita Assembly Center and arrival at Heart Mountain on September 10, 1942; it supplies no assembly-center arrival date. These are dated confinement milestones, not a complete continuous-custody span or a revision of the later draft-resistance case. Heart Mountain institutional biography.

Case

Charges: Violation of the Selective Training and Service Act
Arrested: May 13, 1944
Sentenced: Jun 26, 1944
Released: July 1946
Sentence: 3 years imposed. Served time in federal prison. Released in July 1946. Original individual appeal notice in United States v. Masao Mayekawa, District of Wyoming no.4959, dated June 29, 1944 and filed July 1, identifies judgment June 26, 1944, three-year sentence, and confinement in U.S. Marshal custody. Ken House, NARA senior archivist, identifies McNeil Island intake July 10, 1944 from the original intake register. That prison transfer is not treated as the beginning of earlier custody.
