Biography

Michael Wittels was a Philadelphia artist and Army reservist imprisoned at Fort Knox for conscientiously refusing to wear his uniform and perform military duty.

Case

Charges: Disobeying an order to wear military uniform and report for duty; exact UCMJ article unverified
Released: Feb 6, 1967
Sentence: Confined at Fort Knox after refusing an order on conscience grounds. His account describes three days in isolation, two weeks before trial, and further weeks of confinement following a six-month hard-labor sentence. Released from this sentence February6,1967. Admission date and actual total duration are unverified. A renewed refusal prompted immediate re-detention; the later charge was rejected and he was released to noncombatant duty, with discharge in July1967. That later detention remains separate research; the reported26days before going home concerns duty after release, not proven custody.
