Biography
Jerry Wayne Parrish was a U.S. Army corporal from Morganfield, Kentucky, who crossed the demilitarized zone into North Korea on December 6, 1963. Charles Jenkins later wrote that Parrish described personal and family reasons for leaving rather than an ideological commitment. North Korea gave him the name Kim Yu-il and used him and the other American deserters in propaganda and films. Parrish remained in Pyongyang until his death on August 25, 1998 after longstanding kidney illness.
