Biography
Mary Dann was a Western Shoshone rancher who, with her sister Carrie, led decades of resistance to federal authority over ancestral land guaranteed by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. She was a named defendant in the federal civil grazing dispute United States v. Dann and saw the sisters’ livestock seized in armed federal roundups. She shared the 1993 Right Livelihood Award and died in a ranch accident in 2005. No personal arrest or criminal confinement has been documented.
