Biography
Carrie Dann was a Western Shoshone rancher and land-rights leader who, with her sister Mary, resisted federal grazing fees on ancestral land protected by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. Their campaign produced the Supreme Court case United States v. Dann and continued through repeated federal livestock seizures. On April 1, 2007, she was among 39 anti-nuclear demonstrators arrested for crossing the Nevada Test Site boundary. Available accounts document the arrest but do not establish booking or jail confinement. She co-founded the Western Shoshone Defense Project and shared the 1993 Right Livelihood Award. Her recorded December 9, 1933 birth date is disputed because she had no birth certificate and relatives placed her birth between 1932 and 1934.
