Biography
Martin Young was a labor organizer (Transport Workers Union and Steelworkers) arrested on October 26, 1951 and held without bail at Ellis Island under the McCarran Act — reportedly the only McCarran detainee so held, and confined among mentally ill inmates — facing deportation for his alleged Communist affiliation.
The September 11, 1952 National Guardian reports that Young was arrested and taken to Ellis Island on October 26, 1951, and had remained there without bail for more than ten months. Its family appeal on page 8 explicitly supplies the year and physical transfer to the island. This corrects the unrelated 1919 admission previously stored on his McCarran case. The paper reports the government’s security allegations and his supporters’ protest; it does not establish a discharge date or final custody total.
