Biography

Marthe Teichman was the Communist candidate opposing Representative O’Connor in New York’s Sixteenth Congressional District. A contemporary campaign profile individually reports her arrest on Friday, August 14, 1936 while picketing the East Thirty-second Street Home Relief Bureau. It places her in court with forty-seven unemployed people arrested while protesting the social-audit reduction in relief. The report supplies no individual formal charge, confinement facility, physical release day or completed custody duration. Her own stated campaign connected relief and living costs with bankers’ profits; no guilt finding or prison sentence is inferred. Daily Worker, August 17, 1936, page 4. The September 1, 1936 Daily Worker identifies Marthe Teichman as the Communist candidate in New York’s Sixteenth Congressional District and a member and strike leader of Local 250 of the United Neckwear Makers’ Union. Its headline calls her Martha. The report says she led a group of neighborhood relief applicants to the Home Relief Bureau and was jailed without charges being preferred. It reports that after her release she arranged the defense of five other relief applicants held on disorderly-conduct charges. Those charges are attributed to the other five people, not to Teichman.

This report dates the relief-bureau incident August 15, while the earlier August 17 report underlying the existing arrest entry places her arrest on Friday, August 14. Both accounts are retained; the existing August 14 entry is not changed here. The later article establishes a completed release by September 1 but gives no exact physical admission or release day and no complete custody duration. No additional imprisonment or calculated jail-time total is inferred from the conflicting arrest-day accounts.
