Biography

Mark Berger was a Southern Conference Educational Fund filmmaker recording organizing and community life in Laurel, Mississippi, with David Holden. The report dates both men’s arrest on contributing-to-the-delinquency-of-a-minor accusations to June 24, 1969, while they observed Don Ishee’s trial. It says Berger was released later the same day on a property bond, then rearrested and sentenced to two days in jail for contempt after asking to see the affidavit underlying the first accusation. The imposed two days are not a verified completed duration. The filmmakers and their defenders characterized the proceedings as attempts to suppress their political film work; the paper says Berger was outside Mississippi on the date of the alleged beer incident. Its June 10 dateline conflicts with the later June 24 arrest chronology and is not silently corrected.
